French styles: Louis XIV

April 18, 2024 14:00

☀️ We invite you to discover the French styles and their expression in the decorative arts, tableware and gastronomy. King of kings, Louis XIV embodied the pinnacle of French classicism. Order and symmetry were the watchwords everywhere, but above all, the power of the Sun King had to shine through! Mirrors and torchieres illuminated the grand reception rooms. The famous Boulle marquetry embodied the new luxury developed by Colbert thanks to the royal manufactures. Courtiers flocked to court every day wearing flies, wigs and red-heeled shoes, hoping to be noticed. In Versailles, extraordinary parties were held in Le Nôtre's gardens, with the greatest artists, Molière and Lully to name but a few. The highly codified "service à la française" governed the table arts. Chef François Massialot's menus were incredibly long, but what the king loved the most were the vegetables from his kitchen garden: asparagus, peas, cauliflower and salad adorned with violet petals 💜
