Dining cars

January 08, 2023 14:00

🚂🚃 Mahogany decor, white tablecloths, silverware, crystal glasses and fine china... Who hasn't wished to relive the splendor of dining cars? We take you on a journey across the Atlantic at the turn of the 1860s, aboard the first luxury "sleeping cars" that made European dreams. The young Belgian engineer Georges Nagelmackers quickly understood the advantages of on-board catering: to make long journeys more comfortable, but also to save time, thanks to a non-stop journey. The Compagnie des wagons-lits was thus founded in 1872 with the first dining cars in Europe. For the wealthiest, the Pullman cars even offered private lounges during the Roaring Twenties, where passengers could be served at their seats. With the railroad democratization and the new types of nomadic catering, dining cars have gradually disappeared. Fortunately, you can now rekindle the flame of railway romance and embark on a legendary journey aboard the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, traveling across Europe ⭐
