French styles: Louis XVI

May 12, 2024 14:00

During the reign of Louis XVI, the last French king of the Ancien Régime, the extravagant rocaille style is abandoned for greater simplicity. The sentimental nature of the novel “Paul et Virginie” blossoms in flowers, garlands, ribbons and pine cones decorations. Small pieces of furniture and medallion armchairs adorn the interiors. Walls are decorated with wallpaper and toile de Jouy. The discovery of the ruins of Herculaneum and Pompeii starts the fashion for neoclassicism in France. Cameos, Etruscan forms and column feet are everywhere. The sound of the harp and the taste of croissants are in vogue. Women wear the “pouf”, a hairstyle that literally and figuratively reaches new heights, and have their portraits taken by Elisabeth Vigée Le Brun. While Queen Marie-Antoinette is keen on fashion, the King prefers science and exploration. In 1783, he witnesses the first hot-air balloon flight, with a rooster, a duck and a sheep on board 🐓🦆🐑
