After Charles X, Louis-Philippe ruled France from 1830 to 1848, a period known as the July Monarchy that saw the new bourgeois class take center stage. From Ingres’ paintings to Balzac’s novels, via Daumier’s caricatures in the satirical press, the bourgeoisie came under the ironic gaze of artists. It was also time for Romanticism. People listened to Chopin, devoured Stendhal and admired the works of Delacroix. In the salons decorated by Eugène Lami, the furniture evokes simplicity, robustness and comfort with eclectic influences: neo-Gothic, neo-Renaissance, neo-classicism... Dark wood is once again de rigueur, as is the Voltaire armchair, this time with castors on the feet! On mantelpieces, Jean-Jacques Feuchère’s sculptures of fallen angels stand side by side with Renaissance vases by Claude-Aimé Chenavard.
