French styles: Charles X

Napoleon’s defeat in 1815 marked the return of the monarchy. Charles X ascended the throne, after his brother Louis XVIII. At the Pavillon de Marsan, the Duchesse de Berry lived in style, spreading the little-known but refined Restoration style. In the intimacy of the boudoirs, the influence of the English art of living is felt. Small, light-wood furniture with undulating forms by Jean-Jacques Werner is appreciated. Antique inspiration is followed by a taste for the Gothic. Cathedral-shaped clocks, bonbonnières, scent cellars and other delicate opaline objects were very much in vogue ! These were made by the new crystal makers, such as Le Creusot and Saint-Louis, and sold by merchants around the Palais-Royal. The Italian Rossini was welcomed with open arms by the Parisians, even leaving his mark on local gastronomy. Classics and Romantics clashed on the art scene. The performance of Hernani on February 25, heralded the coming French revolution of 1830...
