Flowers in porcelain

May 09, 2023 14:00

💮🌼🌹🌸🌺 From 1741 onwards, little marvels appeared in rich interiors: porcelain flowers modeled or pastilted by hand by the fairy fingers of the 45 workers of the "fleurisserie" of the Manufacture de Vincennes, under the supervision of Madame Gravant. The Thévenet couple, in charge of their decoration, would have produced more than a thousand of them within six months, testifying to the abundance of this production. These flowers, once painted and glazed, were then mounted on stems of "cannetille" [finely twisted metal] wrapped with silk leaves. The quality of execution, the naturalistic sensitivity and the luxury of these flowers made them very expensive ornaments. Mercier-merchants assembled them on candelabras, sconces or in bouquets. Legend has it that the Marquise de Pompadour dazzled Louis XV by inviting him into the greenhouse of the Château de Bellevue on a winter day. The famous porcelain flowers, painted and delicately fragranced, shone amazingly among the numbed vegetation ❄️
