25,000 years ago, the knife began its history in the form of a carved stone, bone, flint or obsidian, to which a handle was later added. The Romans were the first to invent the folding blade. An indispensable everyday tool, the knife was used to serve medieval banquets. It was also worn on the belt to threaten neighbors... and for picking teeth! To prevent such bad manners, Cardinal de Richelieu imposed the round tip. In the 17th century, porcelain from China seduced the courts of Europe; lords craved for this “white gold” to adorn their tables and cabinets of curiosities. Cutlery with decorated porcelain handles was then in fashion, produced by the greatest French manufacturers such as Mennecy, Saint-Cloud, Tournai and Chantilly. Few of them remain, as porcelain was soft and therefore more fragile. With a view to constantly reinventing the great tradition of the Arts de la table, Bernardaud is delighted to bring this beautiful object back into the limelight ✨
