Trompe-l'œil

19 February, 2023 14:00

🐗 In the middle of the 18th century, we witnessed in Europe a real frenzy for "surprise" terrines : boars, turkeys and cabbages adorned the tables of rich homes, making spectacular decorations of the most luxurious feasts. The manufactures of Strasbourg, Sceaux, Niderviller or Chelsea competed with inventiveness and technicality to make these containers more real than life, letting guests foresee what they will be eating. At a time when people loved to play with appearances, where entertainment was essential and dinner was meant as a show for guests, the "attrapes" [catchers] - plates with fruits and vegetables in trompe l’œil - were quite popular. You have to imagine them at night, lit by flickering candle flames, with sometimes the addition of some real victuals to deceive the gourmands! A tradition that still continues today, being a real treat for the eyes: remember the incredible creations of the « Céramiques Gourmandes » exhibition by the Fondation Bernardaud in 2019 🍧
