The picnic

🥪 Go! Go! It's picnic season! From "pique" [to pick] and "nique" in the ancient sense of small thing without value, the picnic is evoked from Antiquity by Virgil to qualify the meals taken outside by shepherds and peasants. In France, in the Middle Ages, these undistinguished snacks contrasted with the opulent meals that punctuated the hunting parties of the nobility. Servants, white tablecloths and dressed table were taken out. The fashion of the country lunch was in full swing during the Enlightenment. In her hamlet of Versailles, Marie-Antoinette became the spokesperson for this renewed love for rural values. After the French Revolution, as gardens opened to the public, picnics were legion. They became popular with the advent of paid vacations in 1936. Today, there is no question of sticking to paper plates, plastic cups and other vacuum-packed salads. Picnics are chic! So let's take out your best accessories and your best recipes for a beautiful lunch on the grass 😍
