A versatile, multi-faceted artist, Marjane Satrapi grew up in Iran in an intellectual family of progressive thinkers. She draws inspiration from her cosmopolitan culture and expresses her artistic talent in a variety of media. Starting out with drawing, she then branched out to writing, painting, film-making, writing lyrics and now acting. By calling on these different forms of expression, Marjane Satrapi has created a body of work that appeals to and can be understood by everyone.
In 2007, the films adaptation of Persépolis was a big success. This attracted international attention to this well-rounded artist and provided an opportunity for the public at large to discover her many other creations. In her art, Marjane Satrapi uses a form of pictorial expression that makes a remarkably eloquent statement in simplicity. Infused with irony and humor, her figures embody the esthetic criteria of human representation. The artist has fun playing with preconceived values and taking liberties with esthetic codes. Her entire body of work communicates the two cultures, Middle-Eastern and Western, that shaped her artistic vision.
